A Wild Weekend at Toganmain
Our second open weekend, held on 30th-31st August, brought more than 600 visitors to the woolshed. Despite arctic winds and wild weather on the Friday and Saturday, over 400 hardy souls braved the conditions. By Sunday the skies cleared and another 200 plus people came through.
It was a busy couple of days, but an absolute joy to welcome so many to Toganmain. Huge thanks go to our wonderful volunteers - some of whom stepped straight into the deep end.
Special Guests and Classic Cars
Visitors were treated to a display from the Griffith Custom and Classic Car Club, whose vehicles drew plenty of admiration.
We also had a surprise visit from Jane Edmanson of Gardening Australia and her director friend Elizabeth - a real highlight for many.
Looking Ahead: March 2026
We’re thrilled to report that people are already booking for our next open weekend on 28th-29th March 2026. Mark your calendars - it promises to be another exciting event.
Progress on the Woolshed and Quarters
A big breakthrough: three builders inspected our site, with one heritage-experienced builder offering guidance for volunteer preservation works. This is a major step forward toward securing substantial grants.
The quarters, in particular, are deteriorating quickly, so this development is timely and very encouraging.
Saving the Dining Room Chimney
Our much-loved dining room chimney was in danger of collapse, but thanks to support from the National Trust (through David and Jenni Sutherland), we were able to employ a skilled heritage bricklayer.
It’s a relief to sit by the fire now, knowing the structure is sound. Visitors were especially grateful for the warmth on that chilly Saturday.
Next Steps: Restoring the Hearth
We hope to welcome our bricklayer back soon to repair the large hearth, which is deteriorating rapidly. Funding is ready, and we are now working with Heritage NSW protocols before beginning the work.
Building Community Support
Our Toganmain merchandise has been a hit at local markets, where sales not only raise funds but also lift our profile in the region.
We’ve also welcomed several bus tours, which have provided an extra financial boost.
Looking Back - and Forward
From where we started, the progress is remarkable. There is still much to do, but with the dedication of volunteers and the support of the wider community, we are well on the way.
Regards,
Chris
